Confession

The sacrament of baptism forgives all our sins, both original and personal. And the sacrament of "confession," or "reconciliation," exists to forgive the sins committed after baptism, especially those sins that are "mortal" and break our friendship with God and his Church.

The sacrament of confession was instituted by Christ when he breathed his Spirit on his apostles (Jn 20:22-23), giving them the authority to forgive sins in his name. Through priestly ordination, this apostolic authority to forgive sins is handed down to the priests of the Catholic Church.
